A Haglund deformity, also known as a heel, or pump bump, is a painful prominence on the back of the heel. It often restricts the use of certain shoes, which tend to rub on the bump. It can be really problematic in sportsmen and runners.
The bump is situated right underneath the achilles tendon and often involves the 'footprint' of the tendon, where it inserts into the bone.
Sometimes simple measures, such as physiotherapy or modifying your shoes is enough to relieve the pressure on the heel.
If this is unsuccessful, surgery maybe indicated. The surgical procedure will depend upon the size and location of the bump. Sometimes the bony bump alone can be removed, sometimes the Achilles tendon needs to be partially detached in order to access the bump.
