Achilles Tendon Ruptures
Achilles Tendon ruptures are reasonably common. They classically present with a sharp pain, and patients feel as though they have been hit in the back of the ankle. People often remain convinced that their squash or tennis partner has struck them with their racquets!
A rupture of the Achilles Tendon cannot be diagnosed on the history alone, as sometimes the Achilles ruptures much less dramatically. Patients often describe a loss of function, or push off. A defect can usually be felt in the tendon, and when the legs are observed from above, the affected foot seems to be less pointed down than the normal side. Squeezing the calf on the ruptured side usually doesn't cause the foot to point down, which it does on the unaffected side.
